Description: Unit accommodates both pediatric patients and
hematology/oncology patients. The unit consists of 22 beds for
pediatric patients and additional beds for hematology/oncology.
Patient ratios are set at 4 patients per nurse. Common diagnoses
include medical and surgical conditions such as hyperbilirubinemia,
neurological disorders, diabetes, failure to thrive, cystic
fibrosis, and orthopedic issues. There is a Charge RN available
24/7 along with other administrative support. Patient care
technicians are present on the unit with a ratio of 1 tech to 8-10
patients. A pediatric hospitalist is in-house until midnight with
24/7 resident coverage. Nurses are responsible for troubleshooting
respiratory equipment as needed. A pediatric monitor technician
oversees patient monitoring, allowing nurses to focus on patient
care. Shifts occur from 0700 to 1930 or from 1900 to 0730. Weekend
work is expected every other weekend. Holidays are mandatory unless
otherwise discussed. Floating between pediatric units is necessary,
with the capability to float to mother/baby care while avoiding
intensive care units. Scrub color and patterns should be pediatric
appropriate and not revealing. Specific orientation is provided for
