The Nurse Manager (NM) is a registered professional nurse who is
accountable to the Chief Nurse. The NM functions as a supervisor
and assumes accountability for the operation of a designated unit,
identified procedure areas, and clinics. This includes the
management, supervision, and evaluation of care delivered by
nursing and other allied health care staff. The NM is responsible
for contributing to the establishment and implementation of
evidence-based nursing standards of practice. In collaboration with
the Chief Nurse, creates a safe, positive work environment which
enhances care delivery and professional development of clinically
competent staff. Promotes, creates, demonstrates, and ensures a
culturally diverse workforce in which the values and needs of all
individuals are respected and supported. The NM is accountable for
the supervision and direction of the delivery of patient care by
nursing personnel and is responsible for the coordination of
activities at the unit level, distribution of resources and
maintaining a patient centered care environment. responsible for
the planning, integrating, implementing, modifying and evaluating
the effectiveness of the Veteran's care.
Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care
through collaborative strategies with others (VA Handbook 5005,
Part II, Appendix G6). The Nurse II registered nurse is a
proficient nurse who demonstrates proficiency in decision-making
and using the nursing process for complex situations that effect
performance outcomes at the point of care. Practice is enhanced
through development of collegial relationships. This nurse
demonstrates collaboration by using the group process to solve
problems. The focus is on leadership in strategically planning
long-term goals for the microsystem (unit, team, or workgroup) that
impacts operations or resources. The proficient nurse demonstrates
critical thinking with efficiency and accuracy in assessing and
managing situations.
Master's degree in nursing or in a field related to nursing
preferred. Designated first-line supervisory authority,
responsibility, and accountability for the 24/7 operations of their
units, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing
care which complies with generally accepted standards of clinical
practice. This includes the authority to accept, amend, or reject
the work of subordinates. Has continuing responsibility for all the
following functions: (1) Planning work to be accomplished by
subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for
completion of work; (2) Assigning work to subordinates based on
priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the
requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of
subordinates; (3) Evaluating the performance of subordinates; (4)
Making recommendations for appointments, advancements or
reassignments of subordinates; (5) Giving advice, counsel, or
instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative
matters; (6) Hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and
referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level
supervisors; (7) Recommending and/or taking disciplinary action
where appropriate; and(8) Identifying developmental and training
needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such
development and training (VA Handbook 5007, Part III, Chapter
8).
Pay: Competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential for
performance awards
Paid Time Off: 50 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual
leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per
year)
